New Panasonic AJ-HPX255 Camcorder Announced at NAB

At the NAB 2012 show, Panasonic announced the AG-HPX255, an update to its popular AG-HPX250 handheld camcorder. The AG-HPX255 carries over all the existing advanced features of its predecessor and adds a big one: Compatibility with the Panasonic AG-EC4G extension control unit, effectively turning the compact P2 HD camcorder into a studio camera. That should be a key draw for small news stations, educational institutions and houses of worship.
Versatility is key. For field operation, the AG-HPX255 offers convenient handheld operation, a built-in 22x zoom lens with three manual-operation rings, and the familiar P2 memory card workflow (the camera has dual slots). Converting the camera for use in a studio requires no connection of a base station to the camera back or anything of that sort. The camcorder accepts the remote connection directly and also provides HD-SDI output, genlock input and timecode I/O, ensuring full readiness for a multi-camera studio environment.
The optional AG-EC4G remote control unit can be stationed as far as 164 ft (50 m) from the camera using optional cable AJ-C10050G. A 32-ft (10 m) cable is included. The AG-EC4G can be used to control camera gain, white balance, shutter speed, iris, recording operations and more. Besides the remote terminal, the Panasonic HPX255 also adds support for an upcoming proxy recorder, the Focus FS-P250.
Like the HPX250, the AJ-HPX255 employs a 1/3” 2.2 Mp three-CMOS sensor that offers high sensitivity and low noise. The camera records full 1920 x 1080 HD video to various formats, including AVC-Intra100, which offers 10-bit recording in 4:2:2 color space at up to 100 Mb/s. Other recording formats include AVC-Intra50, DVCPRO, DVCPRO HD/50 and DV. The camera records 1080p24/25/30, 1080i60/50, 720p24/25/30/50/60, and standard def as both NTSC and PAL. The HPX255 also features a waveform and vectorscope display, seven modes of selectable gamma, variable frame rates and Dynamic Range Stretch for more finely detailed highlights and blacks.
